The Tremaine Art Gallery at The Hotchkiss School is pleased to present SHIFT: Artists Explore the Complex Condition of Human Migration featuring the work of the following artists: Khaled Barakeh, Carolyn Defrin, Stephan Jahanshahi, Kakyoung Lee, Dr. Elena Marchevska, and Judith Stenneken. Some artists are based here in the U.S., others in the U.K. and Europe. The exhibit is on view through April 8.

Migration is central to the experience of many of our fellow human beings in our current moment in history. Collectively, the work of these artists connects broadly to themes of human migration introduced across the Humanities curriculum at Hotchkiss, including cultural assimilation, climate-induced or forced migration, liminal spaces of habitation, longing for home, feelings of invisibility in a new or different cultural environment, and the experience of refugees seeking asylum.

The multimedia exhibit includes works in film, animation, photography, installation, and poetry. It will exist in its current configuration with the six artists listed through March 24, at which time student work will be added to the installation. Artists Khaled Barakeh, Carolyn Defrin, and Dr. Elena Marchevska will conduct classroom workshops with students in advanced level photography and film classes.
