Funding for International Programs

Students may apply for grants from the school to support community-based service work, international travel, and language study. The generosity of alumni and parents has made it possible for as many as 40 students in a year to receive support from the School to broaden their horizons, learn through experience, and begin to exercise their responsibilities as global citizens.

The grant application, available below, requires:

  • two recommendations,
  • a budget proposal, and
  • an explanation of the goals of the program.

In particular, the Fund focuses on the Summer Fellowship program, which provides grants for student community service work in developing countries. CLASS OF 1981 GLOBAL STUDIES FUND

The Class of 1981 Global Studies Fund provides global travel opportunities for students and faculty members for academic and/or community service projects.

This fund was established by the Class of 1981 during the 2005-2006 academic year in honor of their 25th reunion. The class wanted to increase opportunities for talented, motivated students and faculty so that "travel horizons are broadened and professional development is enhanced. As the School prepares its students morally, ethically, and intellectually, it must also prepare its students for a more global world. A faculty with a global perspective, renewed energy in the classroom, and a curriculum which reflects a more global view will produce globally inclined citizens."

THE GLOBAL INITIATIVE

The Global Initiative is designed to support and expand Global Programs undertaken by Hotchkiss students and faculty.

This fund was established in the spring of 2004 with gifts from four families, and has received annual support from other members of the Hotchkiss community since then. The Global Initiative was created for the purpose of expanding the current Global Understanding programs, enriching and enlivening the curriculum with more international components, delivering opportunities for faculty members to learn and teach overseas and in general providing the human and material infrastructures for the global curriculum and supporting the global programs that Hotchkiss is planning for the future.

THE FUND FOR GLOBAL UNDERSTANDING

The Hotchkiss Class of 1948 established the Fund for Global Understanding in order “to inculcate greater awareness and appreciation of global issues--both in and out of the classroom.” The underlying principle of this gift is the recognition that as the world shrinks, communication and understanding between peoples of differing backgrounds and perspectives--whether ethnic, economic, cultural, or religious--becomes essential.

The Fund supports a number of programs for faculty and students, including teacher exchanges and teacher-led international tours, an international summer fair to introduce all students to summer programs in international living, fellowships for students to develop their own independent international summer experience, guest speakers, Chapel talks, symposiums, publications, and the International Club.

RAPHAEL T. SMITH '85 FUND

The Raphael T. Smith '85 Fund supports a currently enrolled student‘s personal interaction with world cultures within and beyond the U.S. The spirit of this grant is to encourage students to go beyond the barriers of culture (economic status, race, creed, education, or nationality) and touch the common ground of humanity. Following their summer experiences, students make a presentation to the School. Some past recipients have worked in the Czech Republic on a community service project and on Tortola in the British Virgin Islands.
