Computer Specifications
for students

This is an overview of the computer requirements for students at Hotchkiss.

Access to Computing resources

Computers are available for student use in the following locations:
    • Watson Computing Center
    • Edsel Ford Memorial Library
(Also, students may borrow laptops overnight from the library.)
    • Students are provided with space on the School’s servers to store and retrieve their academic files

Student-Owned Computers

For students bringing their own computers to campus:
    • Currently, both PC and Mac platforms are permitted by the School.
    • Each Hotchkiss Faculty member utilizes a white Apple Macbook with 4 GB RAM and 250 GB hard drive. This is the preferred system for students as well.
    • There may be future efforts to further standardize student computers. In that case, the Macbook would likely become the required system.
    • Many computers look alike. It is recommended that student-owned laptops are labeled with the owner's name.
    • Each dormitory room is wired to provide the students with high-speed access to the campus network and the Internet.
    • Wireless access is available in the Science Building, the Library, the Main Building and in the Center for Global Understanding and Independent Thinking. Use of wireless access points is prohibited in the dorms.
    • For information about purchasing a laptop via the School’s student laptop purchase program, click here.

Minimum System Requirements
for Student-Owned Computers

(Generally, you should purchase the fastest processor and the most RAM you can afford)

Macs

  • OS 10.5.6 or higher
  • 4 GB RAM
  • 10/100/1000 Base-T Ethernet

We discourage use of the MacBook Air.

PCs

  • Windows XP Professional with SP3
  • 4 GB RAM or more
  • 10/100/1000 Base-T Ethernet

- or -

  • Windows Vista with SP2
  • 3 GB RAM
  • 10/100/1000 Base-T Ethernet

Note: The School makes no guarantee that student computers will connect to our network. Also, we do not recommend purchasing a “MacBook Air” computer since it will not allow students to connect to our network in their dorm rooms.

Antivirus

  • A current subscription to an antivirus program is required on all computers and must be configured for auto updating.
  • If needed, we will provide a free copy of antivirus for you to install prior to arrival on campus.
  • Computers without antivirus software with current subscription may be restricted from network access, and are not supported by Hotchkiss Information Technology Services.

Student-Owned Software

  • Other than antivirus, the School does not provide software to students.
  • Students must install all the software on their computers to meet their needs.
  • Students should bring the installation CDs and product ID and/or license numbers of all the software installed on their computers. This is to ensure that software can be reinstalled easily, should the need arise.

Email, Calendar and Office Suite Software

  • Students are provided with an email account with 350 MB of storage.
  • Microsoft Outlook (PC) and Entourage (Mac) are our official email and calendar software.
  • Students can also access email via a Web browser using Webmail.
  • Microsoft Office 2007 is our official office suite for PCs.
  • Microsoft Office 2008 (full version) is our official office suite for Macs.
