Financial Assistance

Affording Hotchkiss

If you are wondering whether a Hotchkiss School education is within your family’s financial means, our answer is definitely “yes.” Since its founding in 1891, Hotchkiss has helped families at diverse income levels to afford an exceptional education. Ask any parent of a Hotchkiss student or graduate: the education offered here is a superior investment in your son or daughter’s future.

As a learning community, Hotchkiss encourages students to “put themselves in the way of opportunity.” Our goal, quite simply, is to prepare young men and women from around the globe to live responsibly and resourcefully in a world with fluid boundaries. We teach self-discipline and initiative, openness and a generosity of spirit towards others. As our students continue on to college and with their lives, the benefits of a Hotchkiss education resound again and again. Our graduates gain admission to the most competitive colleges and universities. They lead in their professions and give back to their communities.

Hotchkiss is committed to making an education accessible to diverse and talented students from all economic backgrounds who will make the most of the full array of opportunities the School has to offer. For the 2007-08 school year, Hotchkiss awarded approximately $5,530,000 of tuition support to 197 students, or 33 percent of the student body. Our financial assistance budget enables the School to bring students to campus who otherwise would not have been able to attend.

On the basis of demonstrated financial need, one of every three students receives financial assistance to pay for a Hotchkiss education. Awards range from $2,500 to full tuition; the average award covers more than 75 percent of tuition. Family income levels of students receiving aid range from $0 to more than $150,000 annually.

Types of Financial Assistance

If you are offered admission to the School, we make every effort to help you afford an education here. We expect all families to contribute to the extent they are able. But we are also committed to being a strong supporting partner in financing your Hotchkiss education. In addition to need-based assistance, we offer a range of financing options, including convenient payment plans and low-interest, deferred-payment loans.

Payment Plans

Hotchkiss bills twice a year, with one-half of tuition payable August 1 and one-half December 1.

The Hotchkiss School Monthly Payment Plan
An alternative to semester payments, this plan is administered by Key Education Resources. For a $40 application fee, interest-free tuition payments may be spread out over ten months, beginning June 1. All families may use this service, regardless of whether they qualify for financial assistance.

Achiever Loan Program
To spread payments over a longer time period, Key Education Resources offers the Achiever Loan Program. Creditworthy families are eligible for a flexible repayment term of up to 20 years to finance one to four years of education at a low interest rate. Loans are available in amounts from $2,000 to full tuition.

Need-Based Financial Assistance

Hotchkiss bases all financial assistance decisions on demonstrated need, which is defined as the difference between the amount of money a family can afford to contribute and the cost of tuition. The family's contribution is calculated according to information provided on the Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS). The PFS is created by the School and Student Service for Financial Aid (SSS). Hotchkiss does not offer any type of merit-based financial assistance.

How it works
Financial assistance awards may consist of grants, loans, or both. Grants, which comprise the major portion of a financial assistance award, are funds given by the School that do not require repayment. Low-interest loans, which are often included in an award package, are repaid after the student graduates from college.
