Joshua Hahn
Assistant Head of School, Director of Environmental Initiatives, oversees
all environmental initiatives at
The Hotchkiss School, both programmatic
and operational.
At Hotchkiss we aim to incorporate environmental stewardship into
every aspect of School life, and model what we teach through a combination of
formal academic and residential initiatives. We try to relate complex environmental issues, like climate change, to
students’ everyday lives in developmentally appropriate ways. We endeavor to
provide students with the interdisciplinary tools they need to understand this
region, and where they come from and where they will go to after graduation. By
taking this solution-oriented approach to environmental problems, we prepare
students—regardless of their collegiate studies and ensuing careers—to involve
themselves conscientiously in our collective ecological future. Regenerative
practices (such as producing energy and food, restoring ecosystems, building
soil, and achieving carbon neutrality) reinforce an environmental mentality
characterized by innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship.
