This spring, along with her graduation from Yale, Aleca Hughes ’08 has been honored by numerous organizations with awards for leadership, scholarship, service, and athletic excellence. The prestigious Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup, open to all NCAA student-athletes, and the BNY Mellon Wealth Management Hockey Humanitarian Award, open to all male and female ice hockey players at the Division I and Division III levels, are just two of the many she’s received.
Aleca’s most publicized service came about with her extraordinary efforts to help her close friend and teammate Mandi Schwartz ’10 (1988-2011) when Mandi was diagnosed with cancer. Even after Mandi’s death, Aleca worked tirelessly to increase awareness of the importance of bone marrow testing, educating the broader community on what can be achieved through transplants. It was her way of turning a tragic situation into a chance to help others.
Hear Aleca on this initiative and learn how Hotchkiss prepared her to achieve and to serve.
