The School Service Program

The mission of the Hotchkiss School Service Program is to give students the opportunity to perform meaningful work that contributes to our community in important ways through cooperation with a faculty, staff, or student supervisor. We believe in the following values:

  • The work done should be essential to the successful operation of the School. Students should feel that their work is valuable, and supervisors should feel that the students are making important contributions to their areas of school life.
  • Students should be held accountable for consistently providing high-quality work. Supervisors should establish clear, attainable standards for students at the beginning of their terms of service. Supervisors should communicate regularly to their students about the quality of their work. Students should attend to their jobs faithfully and diligently.
  • Students and supervisors should treat each other with respect at all times. Students and supervisors should try to establish a relationship of mutual trust and understanding, along with shared commitment to the job in question.
  • Students should be assigned jobs in a fair and consistent manner. Wherever possible, each student should be expected to spend approximately the same amount of time on his or her school service job during the course of the entire year. Students should be allowed to request their preferred jobs for the following year, and the School Service Program should make every effort to accommodate those requests.
