Swimming finishes strong at New Englands

by Roger Wistar

Both the boys and girls swim teams had memorable performances at the 2017 New England swimming championships, held in Hixon Pool on Mar. 4-5.

The girls results were highlighted once again by sterling individual performances by Olivia King '19, who came in sixth in diving, and by Jillian Cudney '20, who earned a pair of top-three finishes (second in the 50-yard freestyle at 23.89 seconds, and third in the 100-yard freestyle at 52.67 seconds).

Cudney's top swims come a week after winning both events at Founders, and two weeks after breaking the Hotchkiss girls' record in the 200-yard freestyle.

For the boys, the day included a panoply of personal achievement, as the team reached an incredible mark of having every single qualified swimmer reach his personal best in the event he was competing in. The highest individual places were Alejandro Sarmiento '18 (13th in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:48.02) and 13th in diving for Will Cassou '17 (252.5 points).

At the end of the day, both teams finished tenth at the event, which was won comfortably by Greenwich Academy on the girls side and by Andover for the boys.
