April this year seems to be the time for awards and honors. Especially notable honors went to Tom Reiss ’82, who received the Pulitzer Prize for biography for The Black Count: Glory, Revolution, Betrayal, and the Real Count of Monte Cristo (Crown; September 2012). Reiss spent years researching the life of General Alexandre (“Alex”) Dumas, retracing his steps across the globe to ensure that this man’s incredible life would be preserved, not only in fiction, but also in history. General Dumas was the illegitimate son of a black woman slave and a French nobleman who became a hero of the French Revolution and the very real inspiration for The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo, novels written by his son, Alexandre Dumas. April this year is also incredibly busy.

A campus e-mail to the School community from Director of Global Initiatives Manjula Salomon
on a Friday afternoon effectively makes this point. “Rangitoto College of Auckland, New Zealand will play music for our community from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. tonight. ... Do come give them a full house as you go from Stir-fry Competition [in the dining hall] to the Salisbury Forum” [in Walker Auditorium, where Richard Cohen, President of the Southern Poverty Law
Center, spoke on “Hate and Extremism in the United Statesâ€].
Earlier that same week in an All-School presentation, Randall Kennedy spoke on
“Colorblindness in American Life and Law.” Kennedy clerked for Justice Thurgood Marshall of the U.S. Supreme Court before joining the faculty of the Harvard Law School, where he is the Michael R. Klein Professor of Law. Here’s the video of his talk.
On Thursday of that week, the annual Hunt Concert took place in the Katherine M. Elfers Hall of the
Esther Eastman Music Center. The distinguished Fine Arts Quartet returned to Hotchkiss for
this concert. School Faculty Fabio and Gisele Witkowski joined the quartet to perform piano
quintets by Hungarian composer Ernst von Dohnányi.
Saturday night The Hotchkiss Television and Film Club once again welcomed young filmmakers
to participate in the Hotchkiss Film Festival in Walker Auditorium. And on Sunday afternoon the
School hosted GospelFest, featuring the Gospel choirs of Hotchkiss, Salisbury, Westover, South
Kent, Taft, Miss Porter’s, and Millbrook schools.

Language Week at Hotchkiss
sparks new interests
|
Earlier in April, the Classical and Modern Languages Department sponsored Language
Week, offering activities affirming the intrinsic value of learning foreign languages and
promoting intercultural awareness and multilingualism. During the week, special activities
and programs introduced students and others in the School community to perspectives from
different cultures and sparked interest in foreign language learning. “This week was an occasion
to provide a forum for reflection and dialogue about language and culture,” said Department
Head Abdoulaye Fall.
There were faculty-led panels on topics related to language learning and intercultural awareness,
guest-speaker presentations, foreign films screening, conversations in foreign languages at lunch
tables, presentations of languages not taught at Hotchkiss, and special “entries” in the Daily
Bulletin. The kick-off event took place on Saturday, April 6, with a presentation on “Languages
in Diplomacy” by former UN translator, Mikhail Belikov P’06,’12.

| | Robin Chandler receives
Founders League award for coaching |
Director of Athletics Robin Chandler ’87 has been awarded this year’s Nadal Prize from the
Founders League for outstanding coaching and dedicated service. The recipient of the award demonstrates sportsmanship as defined in the statement: “Play by the rules, accept victory or defeat graciously, respect all who assemble and participate.” Head of School Malcolm McKenzie called the award “well deserved” and Robin “a most amazing coach.”
The award citation reads, in part:
“Robin Chandler was Assistant Athletic Director at Hotchkiss from 1995, and one of two Athletic Directors at the School since 2001. She excels in this role but it is as a coach, especially of field hockey, that she is renowned. Robin's record in this domain speaks volumes: she has coached her field hockey team to 11 New England Championships and 12 Founders League
Championships. Ten of the New England championships were in consecutive years, from 2002 to 2012. It is not likely that such a feat will be repeated.
“Robin takes the talent and enthusiasm that she finds in the school and molds formidable teams in an inspiring way. …”
Congratulations, Robin!

March 26 - May 5
Artist's reception: April 6, 4 - 6 p.m.
Bryan Nash Gill is an artist from New Hartford, Connecticut, well-known for his work with trees native to the woods surrounding his home. Gill creates sculpture and relief prints from sections of fallen pine, hemlock, Norway spruce, ash, oak, and maple, among other species. “Sometimes the simplest things are the most complex things,” Gill has stated. He presents this paradox to viewers with work that honors both biology and beauty. 2012 marked the publication of a collection of Gill's prints, Woodcut (Princeton Architectural Press), a New York Times best book of 2012. The Tremaine Gallery will show recent prints and related sculpture.

Dog Sees God by Bert V. Royal
Hotchkiss Dramatic Association
Spring Production
May 3, 7:30 p.m.; May 4, 8:30 p.m.;
May 5, 2:30 p.m.
Walker Auditorium
(Tickets are $10, $5 for students and senior citizens. Cash or check only. Phone 860-435-3203
or buy at the door.)
Proceeds from the May 5 matinee will benefit the Tyler Clementi Foundation.
In 2004, Dog Sees God was one of the breakout hits at the New York International Fringe Festival, winning the Excellence Award for Best Overall Production, among other awards. An “unauthorized parody,” the play imagines characters from the popular comic strip “Peanuts” as teenagers. Charlie Brown’s chance meeting with an artistic kid, the target of his peer group’s
bullying, offers Charlie the peace of mind he has been seeking and sets in motion a friendship that will push teen angst to the very limits.
The play addresses the timely issue of teenage bullying as well as “how identity plays into the
high school experience,” explains director R. Allen Babcock, Instructor in Theatre, Resident
Designer, and Director of Technical Theatre at Hotchkiss. “It is difficult to talk about bullying,
even on a close-knit boarding school campus. Theatre is a way to put that behavior out in
front of students, forcing them to consider (or reconsider) their actions.” On April 9, the cast of Dog Meets God participated in a student-led anti-bullying conference at The Hyde School in Woodstock, CT, where they performed excerpts of the play.
