    The Hotchkiss Concert Series, a program aimed at bringing some of the world’s greatest musicians to Hotchkiss, was delighted to welcome the violinist Midori to Katherine M. Elfers Hall in the Esther Eastman Music Center on Thursday evening, April 17.

    Peter Matthiessen ’45, the only American writer ever to win the National Book Award in both fiction and nonfiction, died in New York on April 5 at age 86.

    The 2014 Community Service Award Honorees

    Elizabeth “Beth” A. Schmidt ’02, the founder and executive director of, credits Hotchkiss for preparing her to succeed. “At Hotchkiss,” she says, “you are thrown into an environment where you have to learn to manage a lot of things at once. That builds character.” David D. Shields ’73 is devoted to land conservation, especially in southeastern Pennsylvania. An expert on conservation easements, he is associate director of the Brandywine Conservancy, a unique environmental, arts, and cultural preservation organization in Delaware County, PA.
