The boys varsity lacrosse team jumped out to an early lead and held on for a narrow 9-7 victory over Trinity Pawling on May 16.
The victory helps the Bearcats (8-5) break a four-game losing streak in preparation for the team’s final two games of the season. The Pride drops to 9-7 on the year.
Leading the way for Hotchkiss was PG attackman Matt Kavanagh. In addition to scoring three goals and assisting on two others, Kavanagh helped the Bearcats win several face-offs in the second half and even saw some time at midfielder.
Also contributing points for the Bearcats were Jacob Coretti ’12 (three goals), Michael Quinn ’12 (two goals), Carter Reynolds ’12 (one goal), and Connor Gallegos ’12 (one assist).
Goalie Gerald Logan ’12 produced another strong game in net, saving 13 of 20 shots on goal, several of them from point-blank range.
Hotchkiss jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter and never looked back. After weathering an early volley of Pride shots, the Bearcats scored three goals in less than a minute en route to a 3-1 lead by the end of the quarter.
After a back-and-forth second quarter, it seemed as if Hotchkiss had opened an insurmountable advantage in the third with three quick goals to lead 8-3. But the Pride rallied with three goals of their own to cut the lead again to 8-6.
Coretti put the finishing touches on the victory with his third goal at 8:49 to open the lead back to three goals and put the game out of reach.
