  • Hotchkiss Ensembles perform ambitious program for May 24 Crandall Concert

    The Hotchkiss Orchestra and the school jazz ensemble, Right Brain Logic, will showcase their formidable talent as ensembles in The 2013 Crandall Concert this Friday, May 24 at 6:30 p.m. in Katherine M. Elfers Hall, Esther Eastman Music Center. The concert is free and all are welcome to attend in support of these young musicians, many of whom are graduating seniors.

  • Now in the Tremaine Gallery: Photographer Avery Danziger Finds Beauty in Decaying Hospital

    Avery Danziger was the last photographer authorized to enter the buildings of the Harlem Valley Psychiatric Center in nearby Wingdale, New York, which closed in 1994. The resulting images are investigations into the cycle of time, chaos, order, entropy, and renewal. Through Danziger’s perspective, an unexpected and paradoxical beauty emerges from these strange and toxic ruins. The exhibition opens May 14; a reception for the artist will be held May 25, 4 - 6 p.m.

  • H.D.A. spring production: 'Dog Sees God' tackles issue of teenage bullying

    In 2004, Dog Sees God was one of the breakout hits at the New York International Fringe Festival.     The Hotchkiss Dance Company will perform commissioned pieces by Molissa Fenley and Liliana Candotti, both artists in residence during the 2012-13 academic year. The performance will take place April 26 - 28 in Walker Auditorium. Admission is free.

    Spring has sprung and it is time for Gospelfest, now in its 12th year! Gospel choirs from seven area schools will gather Sunday, April 21 at 3 p.m. for a rousing concert full of joyful music. This year, participating schools include Hotchkiss, Salisbury, Westover, South Kent, Taft, Miss Porter’s, and Millbrook.

  • 2nd Annual Hotchkiss Film Festival Partners With Student Festivals Around the World

    The Hotchkiss Film Festival will showcase international student works with competitions for Best Film, Special Jury Prize, and an Audience Award. The festival has again partnered with student and youth film festivals around the world including Surrey Film Festival (Surrey, Canada), The Nordic Youth Film Festival (Tromsø, Norway), and the International Youth Media Festival (Wels, Austria) among others.

  • Nature as Muse: Tremaine Gallery exhibits the work of Bryan Nash Gill March 26 - May 5

    Bryan Nash Gill is an artist from New Hartford, Connecticut, well-known for his work with trees native to the woods surrounding his home. Gill creates sculpture and relief prints from sections of fallen pine, hemlock, Norway spruce, ash, oak, and maple, among other species. “Sometimes the simplest things are the most complex things,” Gill has stated. He presents this paradox to viewers with work that honors both biology and beauty. Guided by Gill’s respectful vision, we can appreciate both. Watch a video of his demonstration to students here.

    The orchestra will feature virtuoso Italian saxophonist Gaetano Di Bacco and conductor Larry Alan Smith, who also serves as Artistic Director for the group. The concert will honor the Year of Italian Culture in the United States with music by Italian composers Giuseppe Tartini, Vincent Persichetti, Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari, Ástor Piazzolla, as well as American composer Michael White.

Central characters Benedick and Beatrice will conduct their war of words before ultimately falling in love in a set that beautifully interprets the garden of the Sicilian estate where the play takes place.     Beginning February 10, 2013, the Tremaine Gallery at the Hotchkiss School will present ‘Manifest Destiny: Photographic works by Leigh Merrill’, an exhibition of new photographs and videos that will remain on view through March 8. Featuring a selection of works from three different yet connected series, Into the Sunset, Delphinidin, and Mockingbird, this exhibition explores Merrill’s fascination with themes of beauty, control, class and romanticism. A talk by the artist will take place in the gallery on Friday, February 22 at 6 p.m. followed by a reception from 7 - 8 p.m.

  • "Sweet Dreams" documentary film about Rwandan women will screen February 10

    After the tragedy of the Rwandan genocide of 1994, Kiki Katese, pioneering Rwandan theater director, asked “How do we rebuild a human being?" The answer was, in part, the creation of Ingoma Nshya, Rwanda’s first and only women’s drum troupe; the other part, the creation of the Inzozi Nzizi ice cream project. "Sweet Dreams" tells the women's inspiring story and will be screened on Sunday afternoon, February 10 at 2 p.m. in Walker Auditorium. Admission is free and open to the public. Donations are welcome to benefit HYSB (Housatonic Youth Service Bureau).

The Hotchkiss Concert Series is pleased to welcome virtuoso pianists John and Mina Perry for a winter concert, Sunday, February 10 at 4 p.m. Both are esteemed artists, educators, and international performers. They will play a program of works by Claude Debussy, Franz Schubert, Franz Liszt, Sergei Rachmaninoff and Johannes Brahms. All are welcome to attend and admission is free.
