Students Win in Real Food Initiative

Real Food? Challenge accepted. Hotchkiss demonstrated its stewardship of the environment by signing on to the Real Food Campus Commitment on January 24, 2013. The two student leaders in this area, Sunny Kim ’13 and Karma Lama ’13, recently were recognized in a national competition, winning the 2013 Real Food Award for Student Group or Student Activist.

Stephen Bolmer, faculty member from 1947-1991, has passed away

Dean of Faculty Kevin Hicks has written to to convey the sad news that Stephen Bolmer, father of Instructor in Mathematics David Bolmer '73 and Michael Bolmer '72, passed away in his sleep on Saturday night at Sharon Hospital. He was a member of the faculty from 1947 to 1991, when he retired and moved to Salisbury with his wife, Peggy. They were married almost 63 years. There will be a service at St. John's Church in Salisbury this Saturday morning, May 18, at 11:00 a.m. Please join us in celebrating the life and contributions of one of the School's iconic teachers, and in offering condolences to our colleague and his family in their time of bereavement.

Since 1931, the Hotchkiss Alumni Association has honored 81 alumni with the Alumni Award. Selected by the Nominating Committee of the Board of Governors of the Alumni Association, each recipient, through personal achievement, has brought honor and distinction to him or herself and Hotchkiss. The Nominating/Awards Committee of the Alumni Board of Governors seeks candidates who have made significant contributions within their fields, and in so doing have earned the recognition of their peers on a national or international level. -

Hotchkiss alumnus Tom Reiss wins Pulitzer Prize

On April 15, the announcement of the 2013 Pulitzer Prizes for Letters, Drama and Music, included the excellent news that Tom Reiss ’82 had won the Prize for Biography for his book, The Black Count: Glory, Revolution, Betrayal, and the Real Count of Monte Cristo (Crown; September 2012).

Robert Hilliker named to head the Edsel Ford Memorial Library

Robert joins Hotchkiss from Columbia University, where he managed Academic Commons, the University's public access digital research repository, during a period of rapid growth, helping to make it one of the top-rated digital libraries in the country.

Wayne Gaynor receives Lufkin Prize

Instructor in Mathematics Wayne Gaynor has become the latest recipient of the Lufkin Prize. Established in 2006, the Prize is given in recognition of faculty members who make a significant contribution to character development within the Hotchkiss community and thus serve as role models for the students. The award was presented to Gaynor by Dan W. Lufkin ’49 in a recent Auditorium.

Trustees Appoint Dr. Kevin Hicks as Next Head of School

On December 13, 2012, completing an exhaustive search that began last spring, the Board of Trustees announced the selection of Kevin Hicks, Associate Head of School and Dean of Faculty, to be the thirteenth Head of School.

The biomass facility shows cost savings

The new Central Heating Facility is running smoothly for an installation of this size, according to Director of Buildings and Grounds William Peabody. A few small adjustments have been made to increase efficiency, he said, while reporting the following usage for the biomass facility, which went into use in the fall.

Tom Flemma appointed Dean of Faculty

Thomas J. Flemma has been named Associate Head of School and Dean of Faculty, effective July 1. The appointment was announced by Kevin Hicks, who is currently the Associate Head of School and Dean of Faculty and will become Head of School on July 1.
