2017 Senior Awards

ACADEMIC AWARDS

FOR EXCELLENCE IN THE ARTS: Elaine Chen, Elisa Xu, Elliot Wilson, Wan Lin Qin, Chloe Otterson, Alan Wong, Joseph Bartusek, Neil Dabhoulkar, Jennifer Liu, Isabel Tyree, Rosie Vilano, and Jackie Ryu

THE ELLEN R. TORREY DANCE PRIZE was established in honor of former faculty member, Ellen R. Torrey, who directed the Hotchkiss Dance Program from 1972 to 1992, for excellence in dance. This year's recipient is Jennifer Liu.

THE PETER D'ALBERT '70 MEMORIAL ART AWARD was established in memory of a talented Hotchkiss art student who was killed in an auto accident. It is presented to a member of the Senior Class for his or her excellence in the arts. This year's recipients are Elaine Chen, Elisa Xu, and Elliot Wilson.

THE JOHN HAMMOND '29 MUSIC AWARD is named in memory of John Hammond '29, who made major contributions to music in this country. This award is given to talented and promising seniors who have shown significant growth in their abilities and have demonstrated these abilities to the Hotchkiss community, whether as instrumentalists, singers, or aspiring composers. This year's recipients are Alan Wong, Joseph Bartusek, and Neil Dabholkar.

THE SARAH T. CRAIG '95 MEMORIAL PRIZE was established in memory of Sarah Craig '95 and is awarded to that member of the Senior Class who best reflects the expertise and unselfish devotion that made Sarah so outstanding a contributor in all aspects of technical theater to the Hotchkiss Dramatic Association. This year's recipient is Rosie Villano.

THE EDWARD K. KLINGELHOFER, JR. '43 AWARD was established in memory of Edward Klingelhofer '43. This award is given for distinguished service to the Hotchkiss Dramatic Association productions of the year. This year's recipient is Isabel Tyree.

THE ROBERT AND SANDY HAIKO FILM PRIZE was established in honor of former faculty members Robert Frank and Sandra Stephens Haiko who founded and ran the photography program at Hotchkiss between 1969 and 2011. The award recognizes excellence in photography and related media arts. This year's recipient is Jackie Ryu.

THE THOMAS P. BLAGDEN '29 AWARD is given by Mrs. Henry S. Lovejoy of Janesville, Wisconsin, for excellence in art. This award is named in honor of Tom Blagden, who taught art at Hotchkiss from 1936 to 1956, and is given to that member of the Senior Class who does the best creative work in art. This year's recipients are Wan Lin Qin and Chan Yong (Daniel) Lee.

THE CERAMICS PRIZE is is awarded to that member of the Senior Class who excels in Ceramics. This year's recipient is Chloe Otterson.

FOR EXCELLENCE IN CLASSICAL AND MODERN LANGUAGES: Jeremy Navarro, Grace Matthews, Jack Kreisler, Richard Song, Wan Lin Qin, and Nick Bolino.

THE HOEY SENIOR GREEK PRIZE was established in 1996 in honor of Allan S. Hoey, master in Greek from 1941 to 1972 and one of the great scholars involved in secondary education. It is awarded to that member of the Senior Class who excels in Greek. This year's recipient is Jeremy Navarro.

THE SENIOR LATIN PRIZE is awarded to that member of the Senior Class who excels in Latin. This year's recipient is Grace Matthews.

KING TAK LAM CHINESE PRIZE is given in memory of Mr. and Mrs. K.T. Lam. Mr. Lam attended boarding school from the age of 7 and was a big advocate of this type of education. He loved and enjoyed the Chinese culture and language. It was his wish that this award be given to that member of the Senior who excels in and shares his enthusiasm and love for the language. This year's recipient is Jack Kreisler.

THE DAVID DEMARAY SENIOR FRENCH PRIZE is named in honor of former Hotchkiss faculty member, David Demaray, who taught at Hotchkiss from 1950 to 1991. This award is given annually to that member of the Senior Class who excels in French. This year's recipient is Richard Song.

THE EMERSON BIGELOW '13 AND JOHN EMERSON BIGELOW '44 PRIZE FOR CONVERSATIONAL FRENCH was established in the memory of Emerson Bigelow '13 and John Emerson Bigelow '44. It is awarded annually to that member of the Senior Class who has learned French through in-course study for at least three academic years at Hotchkiss and has demonstrated the highest level of proficiency in conversational French. This year's recipient is Wan Lin Qin.

THE CHARLES E. BERRY GERMAN PRIZE is given in honor of Charles E. Berry, master of German at Hotchkiss from 1936 to 1970. This award is given annually to that member of the Senior Class who excels in German. This year's recipient is Anna Whittle.

THE SENIOR SPANISH AWARD is awarded to that member of the Senior Class who excels in Spanish. This year's recipient is Nick Bolino.

FOR EXCELLENCE IN ENGLISH: James FitzGerald and Jesse Godine

THE THOMAS H. CHAPPELL '24 PRIZE was established by J. Cornell Schenck '28 in honor of the fifth headmaster of The Hotchkiss School, who taught French from 1928 to 1932, and served as Head of School from 1955 to 1960. This award is given annually to that member of the Senior Class who excels in English. This year's recipient is James FitzGerald.

THE TEAGLE ESSAY PRIZE is named in memory of Mr. Walter C. Teagle '31. This award is given annually to that member of the Senior Class for the best essay on one of a number of topics approved by the faculty of the English Department relating to the subject of books and reading. This year's recipient is Jesse Godine.

FOR EXCELLENCE IN HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCE: Henry Newton and Cal Kromelow.

THE EDWARD B. PRESTON '79 PRIZE is presented to that member of the Senior Class who is most notable for sound scholarship and thoroughness in studies while taking western history. This year's recipient is Henry Newton.

THE PHILOSOPHY & RELIGION PRIZE is awarded to that member of the Senior Class for distinguished work in the study of philosophy and religion during his or her time at Hotchkiss. This year's recipient is Cal Kromelow.

FOR EXCELLENCE IN MATHEMATICS

THE GEORGE NORTON STONE SENIOR MATH PRIZE is given in memory of a noted Hotchkiss math teacher, George Stone, who taught at Hotchkiss from 1949 until his retirement in 1986. This award is given annually to a member of the Senior Class who excels in Mathematics. This year's recipient is Agasha Ratam.

FOR EXCELLENCE IN SCIENCE: Olivia DiMichele and Sally Kuehn.

THE ROBERT B. FLINT '23 SCIENCE PRIZE is named in honor of Mr. Flint. This award is given annually to that member of the Senior Class who has demonstrated the highest degree of excellence in both biological and physical sciences during his or her career at Hotchkiss. This year's recipient is Sally Kuehn.

THE VAN SANTVOORD '08 ENVIRONMENTAL PRIZE is named in memory of the late and distinguished fourth headmaster of Hotchkiss, George Van Santvoord '08, this award is given annually to that member of the Senior Class who has shown during the past year the strongest demonstrated concern, aptitude, and accomplishment in studying the natural environment and man's relation to it. This year's recipient is Olivia DiMichele.

SERVICE

THE FRANK A. SPROLE '38 SOCIAL SERVICE PRIZE was established by Frank A. Sprole '38, a former president of The Hotchkiss Board of Trustees. This prize is awarded annually to those members of the School community who have distinguished themselves in social service. It recognizes extraordinary commitment and constancy in serving the needs of others outside the immediate Hotchkiss community. This year's recipient is Jesse Godine.

SCHOOL PRIZES

THE FIRST SCHOLAR PRIZE is awarded to that student who has achieved the highest grade point average during his or her senior year. This year's recipient is Alan Wong.

THE HEAD OF SCHOOL'S PRIZE is awarded to that member of the Senior Class who has maintained the highest average in scholarship for the last three years. This year's recipient is James FitzGerald.

MAJOR SCHOOL PRIZES

THE WALTER CLEVELAND ALLEN, JR. '32 PRIZE was established in memory of Walter Cleveland Allen Jr. '32 by members of that class. This award is given annually those members of the Senior Class who, in the judgment of the seniors and the faculty, are most notable for honorable conduct, conscientiousness, and future promise. This year's recipients are Aaron Casella and Sally Kuehn.

THE CENTENNIAL PRIZE was established by the Class of 1992 and is awarded to those members of the Senior Class who, in the judgment of the seniors and the faculty, have gained the respect of the community through their enthusiasm, vitality, and unselfish generosity to others. This year's recipients are Sarah Glasfeld, Claire Hawthorne and Jelani Hutchins-Belgrave.

THE FACULTY PRIZE is awarded by vote of the faculty to those members of the Senior Class who are distinguished by their humility, kind-spiritedness, and strength of character, qualities that have made a great difference, often in subtle ways, to our community during their time here. This year's recipients are Hunter Borwick, Christian Kohlmeyer, Corbin Kucera, Grace Matthews, Chloe Otterson, Pallavi Pemmireddy, Sam Saxena, Andy Scheerer, John Vander Hoeven, Annabel von Weise and Elliot Wilson.

THE CHARLES E. LORD PRIZE was established by Charles E. Lord, father of four Hotchkiss graduates (Classes of '18, '22, '22, '23). This award is given annually to those members of the Senior Class who during their course at the School have shown the largest measure of general improvement, perseverance, and courage. This year's recipients are Jasmine Gratton, Jaiden Napier, Jeremy Navarro and Sophie Sitinas.

THE ALBERT WILLIAM OLSEN '13 PRIZE was established in memory of Albert William Olsen '13. This award is given annually to those members of the Senior Class who have been conscientious, industrious, generally excellent in scholarship, and faithful in the performance of duty. This year's recipients are Emilia Game, Jesse Godine, Alan Wong and Angela Xiao.

THE CHARLES DENTON TREADWAY '14 MEMORIAL PRIZE Established in memory of Charles Treadway '14, this award is given annually to that member of the Senior Class whose industry, courage, leadership, and honorable conduct have done the most for the life and character of the School. This year's recipients are Fin Ong and Aba Sam.
