Novice Debaters Earn Spotlight at Home Competition

The Hotchkiss Speech and Debate Club competed against 42 teams from 20 schools on Nov. 5 at its only home debate of the season. With 10 wins and 2017 points, Hotchkiss placed third in the competition with novice debaters winning top awards. David Vega '20 and Jiahua Chen '19 took first place novice team, while second place went to Alex McLane'20 and Szilveszter Pavloygi '19. Vega also won first place novice speaker, while Palvolgyi took second, and Alex McLane '20 placed third.

"Although we were not able to win the best school award, I am incredibly proud of our team," said co-captain Helena Park '18. "I know how much work everyone put into this tournament all week and it was so much fun just being a part of this team today. Our novices have been very strong all season and we hope to do even better at the competition with Buckingham, Browne and Nichol, which is the week we return from Thanksgiving."
