The Hotchkiss Speech and Debate Team started the year strong with a victory on Sept. 17 at the Roxbury Latin School Debate Tournament, the first debate of the season. Hotchkiss debaters went 10-2, ahead of Andover, Groton, and Buckingham, Browne and Nichols. Thirteen schools sent teams to the debate.
The Hotchkiss team was led by captains Aadi Kulkarni '18, Helena Park '18, and Jack Cohen '18. Kulkarni and Annabelle Burns '18 earned a perfect 3-0 in their debates. The novice debaters had an especially good day. David Vega '20 and newcomer Justin Choi '20 went undefeated, the only 3-0 novice team.
The first place novice pair was the team of Vega and McLane. McLane and Palvolgyi placed at the top of the individual novice speakers as well.
This was the first debate of the year and it was good to see the advanced debaters already in mid-season form, said David Conti, instructor in classics and team coach.
The especially strong showing by the novices is a great sign for the rest of this year and beyond, he added.
The season continues with a public speaking tournament at Stoneleigh Burnham on October 1, and a second parliamentary debate tournament at St. Sebastian's on October 8. The one home debate of the year is scheduled for November 5. The Speech and Debate Team meets every Tuesday and Thursday, 6-7, in the SACR; all students are welcome to attend.
