College Advising

College Process Timeline

Fall of upper-mid year

  • Attend “mini-college fairs,” held on three evenings in the fall. Students can also meet with college representatives who travel to Hotchkiss at other points during the semester.
  • Take the PSATs in October.
  • The College Advising Office recommends that students take the SAT.

Spring of upper-mid year

  • Students are assigned to one of four college advisors. Advisory groups meet once a month, but students are encouraged to schedule individual conferences in between group meetings. In these meetings, students will come up with a strategy for researching the colleges and universities that interest them, plan testing dates, and talk about how to maximize their academic course load and extracurricular activities.
  • Take SAT Subject Tests.
  • By the end of upper-mid year, students will have completed their Common Application essays in English class and filled out the current year’s Common Application, which they can save and use when the new Common Application goes live in the fall.

Fall of senior year

  • Plan regular meetings with college advisor to stay on track during the college application process.
  • Submit applications in the fall for Early Decision or Early Action, and in the winter for regular decision.
