Hotchkiss’s Tremaine Art Gallery presented ADRIFT – Selected Washi Works 2017-2025 by Daniel Heyman from Sept. 5 to Oct. 11, 2025. For two weeks, Heyman also worked with students as an artist in residence.

Heyman has spent 20 years going back and forth to Japan to make paintings out of paper pulp at the Awagami Paper Factory. Starting with the idea of flowing water, an important element in the making of paper, Heyman shows viewers a world of sunsets over serene ponds, threatening seas, capsized boats, landing geese, and swimmers, all in lush and vibrant colors.

After a lifetime of making work that addressed subjects including human rights abuses and the destruction of war, Heyman has created a body of more personal work, much of which was created during this past summer at Awagami.

A recipient of both a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Pew Fellowship in the Arts, Heyman’s work is represented in collections across the U.S., including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Library of Congress, Yale University Art Gallery, Philadelphia Museum of Art, St. Louis Art Museum, Amon Carter Museum of American Art, and the Getty Research Institute. Heyman was department head of printmaking at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2021-22, where he has taught since 2004, and has taught at Princeton since 2010.

Engaging Students Through Process

During his Hotchkiss residency, Heyman worked alongside students in the print studio, leading a 10-day intensive in traditional Japanese woodcut techniques. He also demonstrated various methods for all grade levels in Studio Art classes. Students learned the fundamentals of carving, inking, and printing, gaining an appreciation for the rhythm and patience of handmade print processes.

In the Tremaine Art Gallery, Heyman welcomed members of the community for an artist reception on Oct. 4 and spoke with students during a talk on Oct. 7.

Heyman’s collaborative approach fostered an atmosphere of experimentation and respect for craft. By witnessing a professional artist at work, and creating side by side with him, students discovered new ways to connect technical skill with conceptual depth.
