The boys varsity squash program remained undefeated through its first two matches with a 6-1 victory over Deerfield on Dec. 2, the first home win over the Big Green since 2011.
The Bearcats (2-0) were led by gritty play at the top of the ladder, with both #1 Justin Ghaeli '18 and #2 Tyler Mackesy '19 winning their matches in five games.
Also scoring points for Hotchkiss on the day were #3 Taylor Clayton '21, #5 Sam Charlton '20, #6 Obi Okoli '20, and #7 Tommy Whittemore '18, who all won their matches in three games.
Mackesy provided the early drama on the afternoon, dropping his first two games 7-11 and 6-11 before rallying to win the third game 11-6 to cut into the margin. Facing another elimination game, however, he found himself down 4-8 before rallying with four points to tie the game, eventually winning 12-10. He then cruised to a 9-3 lead in the final game before closing out his opponent.
Ghaeli's match was more of a see-saw affair, with the two players trading games 12-10, 7-11, 11-1, and 5-11, setting up an epic final game. Ghaeli fended off match balls at 8-10, 10-11, and 11-12 before earning his own first chance to close out the match at 13-12. It was then Deerfield's turn to rally, as Ghaeli failed to convert two chances before finally prevailing, 16-14.
