Second-half goal by Campbell '21 seals win for field hockey

A second-half goal by Meagan Campbell '21 provided all the scoring the field hockey would need to grind out a tough 1-0 victory over Sacred Heart on Oct. 14.

Playing on a cloudy Saturday in front of a large Parents Weekend crowd, the Bearcats (6-0-1) maintained their unblemished record after withstanding a stiff challenge from the Tigers in the first half.

Goalie Emma Smith '18 kept Hotchkiss in the game with five key saves, four coming in the first half when Sacred Heart applied much of the pressure. Despite playing with no substitutes, the Tigers controlled possession for much of the period, and kept the ball in their attacking half of the field. Over the first 30 minutes, the Tigers outshot the home team 7-1.

After halftime, however, the Bearcats seemed to collect themselves and gain control of the game. In the 36th minute, Hotchkiss forced a corner and Campbell pushed the ball across after a scrum in front of the net for the 1-0 lead.

The Tigers tried to notch the equalizer, but it was Hotchkiss who would control the ball for the majority of the period. A late green card on Sacred Heart forced them to play the majority of the last three minutes one player down, blunting their counterattack.

The team returns to action with two away games next week, at Kent on Wednesday Oct. 18 and at Choate on Saturday Oct. 21.
