Six Hotchkiss wrestlers placed in the top six in their weight classes at the Western New England championships, helping propel the team to a sixth-place team finish.
Three Bearcats – Dean Parenteau '18 at 170 pounds, Nick Adams '19 at 132 lbs., and Christian Crider '20 at 152 lbs. – finished in the top four and thus have qualified to wrestle next weekend at the New England championships.
Peter Coumantaros '19 (fifth at 160 lbs.), Ben Meyers '19 (fifth at 195 lbs.), and Josh McCarthy '18 (sixth at 220 lbs.) also finished in the top six in their weight classes. Five other Hotchkiss wrestlers competed at the event.
Crider earned the highest individual place, finishing runner-up at 152 to a two-time Westerns champion from Trinity-Pawling. Along the way, he earned two pins before falling 6-2 in the finals.
Adams finished third at 132, earning all of his victories by pin. After losing 7-2 in the semifinals to the eventual champion, he rebounded with pins in the consolation semifinals and finals, the last one coming in less than a minute.
Parenteau enjoyed a similar ride at 170, earning four pins en route to a fourth-place finish. He ran into a tough match in the semifinals, but bounced back with another pin to reach the consolation finals.
McCarthy battled back from injury to record a first-round pin in his opening match and then a gritty 12-11 victory in his second-round match. The match came down to the last gasp, with McCarthy's opponent leading 11-10 before McCarthy launched an explosive move to record a two-point takedown in the final seconds. After losing to the eventual champion, McCarthy retired from the event due to the injury.
Parenteau, Adams, and Crider will all compete next weekend at Tabor Academy.
