At Hotchkiss, we strive to develop players who love the game of golf and play it with integrity. Whether you are just discovering the sport or competing in national tournaments, the Girls Varsity Golf team at Hotchkiss has a place for you to learn, contribute, and develop a game that will last the rest of your lives. The team promotes a positive environment where each individual’s results have a direct impact on the team’s ability to achieve its goals. We hope that our girls leave the program with a sense of accomplishment for the skills they have developed and the friendships that they have made, both on and off of the course.
While all sports offer opportunities for character growth and important life lessons, golf is unique in that it is the only sport where one calls penalties on oneself. Golf teaches the importance of integrity, and we strives to instill that lesson in our players.
For the last three years, the girls varsity golf team has become more competitive within an already strong league. In 2016, the Bearcats finished in third place at the Founders League Tournament. In 2017, the season record was 16-1-1, with a second-place finish in both the New England Tournament and Founders League Tournament. In 2018, the season record was 18-0-1, with a second-place finish for the New England Tournament and a third-place result at the Founders League Tournament. Members of our team have also competed in regional and national golf tournaments, including those hosted by the AJGA and USGA.
We are fortunate to have our own 9-hole course (3,043 yards, par 35) that circles the campus of the school and is closed to the public every afternoon during the school season. Designed by prominent golf course architect Seth Raynor, the Hotchkiss golf course was ranked 10th in Golfweek Magazine's "Best Places You Can Play" in Connecticut for 2016. Its undulating greens and moderate elevation changes provide a fun and appropriate challenge for our team members. We also have an indoor facility for practicing during inclement weather.
Head Coach Doug Kneeland Phone: 860-435-3207 Send email
Coach Kneeland grew up at a boarding school before attending Hotchkiss, and he had the opportunity both to see the value of sports at all levels and to play many sports, including golf, while growing up. After placing 4th in the Vermont Junior Amateur, he decided to focus on baseball in the spring and summer until an opportunity to join the Golf team at Swarthmore College presented itself during his junior year. He then spent two years on the Varsity Golf team, earning a spot on the ladder for all matches. Back at Hotchkiss as a faculty member, Coach Kneeland became the JV boys golf coach in 2008, and then became the girls varsity coach in 2021.
While Coach Kneeland believes that all sports offer opportunities for character growth and important life lessons, he thinks golf is unique, in that it is the only sport where one calls penalties on oneself. Golf teaches the importance of integrity, and he strives to instill that lesson in his players.
