Mountain biking at Hotchkiss is a coed program that offers athletes an opportunity to challenge themselves physically and mentally through a structured approach to riding and racing. Club athletes ride on campus 4 days a week, primarily in the Beeslick Woods and in the new skills park currently under development. Team athletes commit to off campus training rides and races on Wednesdays and Saturdays in addition. Both groups will engage in technical skill development and training for core stability, full body strength, and cardiovascular endurance. Athletes confront mental as well as physical challenges, learning to overcome their fears, extend their performance beyond their self- limitations, and gain increased confidence in their own abilities. Experience is not necessary, but all athletes will be asked for commitment and dedication.
-- Mike Fitzgerald, Head Coach, Varsity Mountain Biking
Hotchkiss has taken a leadership role in developing a race league for independent schools in the region, and our riders have stood atop the podium in each race of last year’s inaugural season. We travel to some of the premier riding venues in the region to train, and this is evident in the speed and skill our riders demonstrate during competition.
Hotchkiss benefits from having a challenging trail network right on campus, allowing us to spend more time riding and less time driving. In addition, we are developing a skills park which will better enable us to conduct skills progressions in an easily repeatable, safe environment. Athletes learn how to build sustainable trails and features in the process.
