Gigi Day ’22 and Mo Nuhu ’23 Rise as Rookies!

The New England Small College Athletic Conference announced both its women's soccer awards and men's soccer awards recently with Hotchkiss alumni Gig Day ’22 and Mo Nuhu ’23 earning honors.

Gigi Day ’22

The Rookie of the Year honor was shared by Amherst's Gigi Day of Middlebury and Precious Novidzro.

Day of the Middlebury women's soccer team has been named the NESCAC Co-Rookie of the Year, and has been tabbed to the all-conference second team alongside fellow teammate Maddie Schin.

  • Day (Co-Rookie of the Year & Second Team)
  • Day is the first Panther in program history to earn NESCAC Rookie of the Year honors, while also being lauded to the All-NESCAC Second Team.
  • The midfielder led the team in goals with six, while her 12 points ranked second on the squad.
  • Day played in all 15 contests this year, starting five of those, while logging the most minutes of any rookie (786) on the squad.
  • The Panther scored the game-winning goals in a 1-0 victory over Bates and a 2-1 upset over then-#12 Williams to close out the season.

Day is the first Middlebury Panther to be named NESCAC Rookie of the Year. Day also earned a spot on the All-NESCAC Second Team.

Mo Nuhu ’23

Amherst’s Mohammed Nuhu was voted as the conference’s Rookie of the Year.

Nuhu is the sixth Amherst player to be named NESCAC Rookie of the Year. The first year leads Amherst in scoring with 18 points, scoring a team-high seven goals and adding four assists. In the 54th minute of the NESCAC Championship game, Nuhu’s lofted shot found the back of the net to lift the Mammoths past Tufts, 1-0, allowing Amherst to repeat as conference champion. Nuhu enters the NCAA Tournament having recorded at least one point in six straight matches.

Nuhu burst onto the collegiate pitch this fall with great ball skills, speed and a knack for scoring. He had the game-winning and only goal in the NESCAC Championship game and in his last six games, he had 5 goals and 2 assists. In addition, Nuhu earned All-NESCAC First Team.

This comes on the heels of Mo’s exceptional high school soccer career where he earned multiple All-State and All-League awards at Hotchkiss, and served as a team captain!
