The boys varsity hockey team took an early goal from Alex Mozian ’19 and made it stand up for a gritty 1-0 win over visiting Deerfield on Jan. 26.
The Big Green (10-6-1) came into Lakeville ranked in the top three in many prep school hockey polls, but the Bearcats (9-6-1) sent them home with their second loss in less than a week. Meanwhile, Hotchkiss completed a perfect week after a 2-1 victory over Berkshire on Wednesday.
Mozian’s goal at 5:02 in the first period, a rebound shot in traffic in front of the net, gave the home team an early lead, and then goalie Henry Wilder ’20 and the defense turned away chance after chance from Deerfield to preserve the win.
As the final horn sounded, all the players rushed onto the ice and huddled together in celebration.
For the first two periods, the teams played to a virtual draw, with Hotchkiss actually enjoying a slight advantage in shots, 18-16 over the Big Green. In the third period, Deerfield ratcheted up the attack and outshot the Bearcats 11-4, but could not find the back of the net.
Wilder drew loud ovations from the crowd with each successively remarkable save, including a tremendous stop in the second period on a breakaway rush from a Deerfield skater. The Hotchkiss goalie had an anxious moment midway through the third period, losing his stick for several seconds with Deerfield in the zone, but recovered before any damage could be done.
The Bearcats also held their own on faceoffs, with top-line centers Quinn Carlisle ’19 and Jeremy Abraham ’20 winning 23 of 44 draws.
Carlisle led all attackers with five shots on goal, followed by Mozian (4) and Nick Traggio ’20 (3).
The Bearcats look to continue their winning ways with a pair of away games next week, first traveling to Trinity-Pawling on Monday and then at Choate on Wednesday.
