Some timely shooting and a gritty effort from netminder Andrew Tieso ’20 helped lift the boys varsity lacrosse team past visiting Kent with a 6-4 victory on Apr. 24.
Tieso recorded nine saves on 13 shots faced and Ryan Sellew ’21 and Robert Phillips ’20 each added a pair of goals as the Bearcats (3-4) pulled away from the Lions in the second half.
Brian Haywood ’21 also made a huge contribution to the victory, winning eight of ten face-offs to help Hotchkiss control possession, although both teams struggled with turnovers and ground balls on the day.
The Bearcats jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter, thanks to an even-strength goal by Sellew and a man-up goal by Phillips less than three minutes later. The Lions battled back, scoring one at the end of the first quarter and another just a short way into the second. For the rest of the second quarter, the teams traded goals, with Hotchkiss nursing a 4-3 lead into the intermission.
After a scoreless third quarter that saw the two teams play essentially to a draw, Greg Ross ’19 restored the two-goal advantage, burying a point-blank shot from the right side with just under five minutes to play. Undaunted, Kent responded with their own goal two minutes later to cut the lead back to 5-4.
The insurance goal for Hotchkiss came a minute later, when Sam Gee ’21 received a pass right in front of the crease and found the back of the net for the final goal and the 6-4 victory.
