The seven seniors on the girls varsity lacrosse team had a final game to remember with a dominant 17-3 victory over visiting Choate on May 22.
The Senior Day win for the Bearcats (10-5) was a tour de force for the graduating players, as seniors combined to score 11 of the team’s 17 goals, including the first six of the game. Three seniors – Ellie DeSouza ’19, Abby Hillebrecht ’19, and Jillian Mazzocca ’19 – recorded hat tricks on the day.
Hotchkiss led from wire to wire through a combination of skillful possession and swarming defense. The Bearcats led nearly two-to-one in possession time, keyed in large part by the draw work of Ellie Traggio ’22, who won 14 of 17 draws.
The Bearcats peppered the Choate goalie all day, ultimately leading 35-8 in total shots. DeSouza led all attackers with six shots and five shots on goal.
Goalie Jillian Kane ’21 saved four of the seven shots that she faced.
In the first half, goals by Gianna Bruno ’19, Katherine Goldstuck ’19, and DeSouza in the first four minutes gave the team an early 3-0 lead that they would not relinquish. The Bearcats added four more goals before Choate tallied their first score of the day at 7-1. The half ended with a goal in the final seconds by Alexandra Bowman ’21 to give Hotchkiss a 11-1 lead.
