On Wednesday the 10th the Hotchkiss girls varsity hockey team faced off against Greenwich Academy in order to win 3-1 in an extremely competitive game. Last year the Bearcats beat Greenwich in a close game only winning 2-1 so they knew that it would be a good game. The first period saw a lot of action with the puck never staying in one place as each team worked hard for every shot. Goalie Steph Ionescu ’24 made countless good saves in the beginning in order to keep the game tied at 0-0. Greenwich got a penalty giving Hotchkiss a powerplay and this let the Bearcats get some very good shots however the Greenwich goalie was able to skillfully defend them.
Hotchkiss started the second period off strong as Hotchkiss finally started to get some momentum as they had many close shots and on one occasion they got extremely close to a goal. However their first goal didn't come until almost halfway through the period. While the Bearcats were short handed Caroline Bliss ’25 was able to get the puck and sneak it past the goalie. Soon after that lower mid Alyssa Filmer was able to score again giving Hotchkiss their second goal increasing their lead over Greenwich.
Tensions got high in the final period as Greeniwh pushed to regain momentum. This led to many penalties from both teams as they both worked hard to maintain possession of the puck. Towards the end of the period Greenwich got their first goal on a powerplay as they were able to work around the Hotchkiss team that was down a player. However in the last minute the Bearcats responded with another goal from Caroline Bliss securing their win. The victory over Greenwich Academy pushes the Hotchkiss record up to 5-3, Hotchkiss will face off against Noble & Greenough on Friday hoping to beat a team that challenged them last year.
