Head of School Craig Bradley announced today the appointment of Dempsey Quinn to director of athletics, effective July 1. "Dempsey is a student-centered educator who holds a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. He has demonstrated deep integrity, high standards, and kindness on a daily basis as a class dean, math teacher, dorm head, and coach," Bradley noted.
Quinn's appointment comes after a thorough national search conducted by specialized recruiters who reviewed more than 100 applications and interacted with dozens of candidates. As athletic director, Quinn will continue to serve as head coach of the varsity football team. A new class dean of the Class of 2024 will be announced in the coming days.
Quinn began his career as an independent school educator at the Berkshire School, where he taught math and coached football, basketball, and baseball. He left Berkshire to take up a football coaching position at Brown University, coaching running backs and tight ends. Quinn also recruited scores of student-athletes to Brown. He came to Hotchkiss in 2020.
As director of athletics, Quinn will take forward the recommendations of the 2020 athletics review conducted by the University of Washington’s Center for Leadership in Athletics. In collaboration with the dean of faculty, he will oversee the revitalization of systems to support the professional development of coaches. He will also work closely with the student life team to ensure that all students feel safe, seen, and supported in our co-curricular program.
Originally from Pittsfield, MA, Quinn is an accomplished athlete. He played three varsity sports at Avon Old Farms, and he was a three-year starter on the Cornell University football team. While at Cornell, Quinn earned a B.S. in industrial and labor relations. He subsequently earned an M.S. in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia University.
Quinn currently resides on campus with his wife Julia and their sons.
