Petersen ’22 Heads to Youth Worlds

An epic year of sailing for Chapman Petersen ’22 will conclude next week as he represents the United States at the 2021 Youth Sailing World Championships.

The event, to be held Dec. 11-17 in Oman, will feature 433 sailors from 56 different countries across 11 different divisions. It is the 50th edition of the competition, which was last held in 2019.

Petersen will sail for Team USA in the Male One Person Dinghy (ILCA 6) class, his usual singlehanded class. He qualified for the event by virtue of winning the Midwinters West regatta in June.

“I feel so blessed to get the opportunity to compete,” said Petersen. “I can't express enough how grateful I am to get this opportunity to show everything I've worked for.”

It has been a tremendous year for Petersen, who won the U.S. Sailing Youth Championships in October, the NESSA Singlehanded title, and two events in the U.S. Open Sailing Series. He also finished second at the ILCA Youth World Championships.

Petersen said he expects an elite level of competition in Oman. “Understanding that this is a competition between 60 national champions, it's clear that this is the best competition possible, and the pinnacle of all U19 sailing,” he said.
