Petersen ’22 Wins Second Straight U.S. Open Regatta
Petersen '22 Wins U.S. Open Sailing Series Event

For the second time in less than a month, Chapman Petersen ’22 has won a U.S. Open Sailing Series event in dominating fashion.

Sailing in the Laser Radial class in Clearwater, Fla. from Feb. 4-7, Petersen once again raced past the rest of the field, finishing with 19 net points over 11 races. The result included five victories and no worse than a seventh-place finish out of a field of 30 sailors.

In fact, Petersen’s two seventh-place finishes were dropped as his two highest scores at the event, meaning that his highest scoring finish was a single sixth-place finish over the four days. No other sailor at the event finished with fewer than 30 points.

The victory comes on the heels of another overwhelming win on Jan. 15-18 in Fort Lauderdale and is the final Florida regatta in the new sailing series.

U.S. Sailing describes the purpose of the series as “an increase in high-quality Olympic-class racing for U.S. athletes with a long-term goal of attracting top-level international competitors to race in these regattas for years to come,” according to the association’s website.

There will be three additional races this summer in California.
