Six members of the varsity sailing team traveled to Cleveland for the 2021 ISSA Mallory Doublehanded National Championship, finishing tenth overall.
The event, hosted by The Foundry on June 5-6, was scheduled as a two-day affair, but lack of wind prevented any racing on Sunday, and there were only eight races in each division.
Sailing for Hotchkiss in the A Division were Chapman Petersen ’22 and Kate Moran ’23, and sailing in the B Division were Jeb Bechtel ’22 and Aurora Smedvig ’22. Katie Farrington ’22 and Helen O’Neill ’23 also attended as reserves.
In fleet racing, each of the 20 qualifying schools entered one boat in each division, and team scores are equal to the sum of each boat’s place in each of the eight races.
The Bearcats finished with 171 points overall, a balanced effort that included 80 points from Petersen and Moran and 91 points from Bechtel and Smedvig. Hotchkiss was the best-placed school from New England, finishing ahead of fellow qualifiers St. George’s (172) and Tabor (204).
Petersen and Moran’s best result was a fourth-place finish in the seventh race, while Bechtel and Smedvig finished seventh in the final race of the day.
Antilles School won the title with 97 total points.
