Sailing Wins New England Teams

The varsity sailing team added another accolade to a notable season, capturing the New England Team Racing championships over the weekend of May 14-15 at Connecticut College.

It is the third major result for the team this season, after winning the Connecticut state championships in April and finishing second at the New England fleet race tournament last week.

The event included eight schools and featured a double round-robin format over four rounds. In the first two rounds, each school sailed against all seven other schools twice. The top four schools then advanced to a second set of double round-robin races.

The Bearcats put together a dominant overall effort, winning 16 of 20 races in the first two rounds. In the first two rounds, Hotchkiss dropped just a single race, sweeping Portsmouth Abbey, Brunswick, Tabor, Greens Farms Academy, Barrington, and Portland.

In the third round, the Bearcats beat Greens Farms and St. George’s, losing only to Brunswick, to push their overall record to 15-2. A win over Greens Farms in the first race of the fourth round clinched the title, giving Hotchkiss a three-race lead with just two races left.

The team used a variety of lineups throughout the two days. Chapman Petersen ’22 and Phoebe Hackett ’24 sailed together for all 20 races. In the other two boats, Samara Walshe ’25 and Jeb Bechtel ’22 sailed with various combinations of crews, including Oscar Emus ’23, Lucy Jervis ’23, and Kate Moran ’23.

With the win, Hotchkiss qualifies for their second national championship opportunity, the 2022 ISSA Baker Team Race National Championship, to be held on May 21-22 in Seabrook, TX.
