The boys and girls squash teams traveled to Philadelphia to compete in the 2022 U.S. High School Team Squash Championships on Feb. 25-27, finishing fifth and tenth, respectively.
Seeded #5, the boys earned a comfortable 6-1 opening win over #12 Shipley, earning a matchup with #4 Deerfield. The Big Green pulled out a tight 4-3, victory, sending the Bearcats into the second consolation bracket.
The team rallied with two more decisive 5-2 wins, first over #9 Episcopal and then over #7 St. Paul’s, to finish in fifth.
Each of the seven members of the team won at least one match, led by Oscar Okonwo ’25 at #4 and Christian Waldron ’23 at #7 with wins in all four matches. Also competing for Hotchkiss were Callan Venkatesan ’23 at #1, John Nicholson ’22 at #2, William Burke ’22 at #3, Thomas Bailey ’22 at #5, and Eli Levy ’24 at #6.
The girls team entered the tournament seeded #12, and lost a tough 4-3 decision to #5 Winsor School. In their next match, the Bearcats earned a convincing 6-1 over #13 Bryn Mawr. The team then dropped its last two matches to #16 St. Paul’s and #7 Lawrenceville to finish tenth.
Maya Mansoor ’24 led the way at #2 with four victories, joined on the team by #1 Elise Kang ’25, #3 Mary Wood ’23, #4 Campbell Burke ’24, #5 Virginia Wood ’24, #5 Lauren Sonneborn ’23, and #7 Alexandra Chou ’23.
