Ellie Traggio ’22 had two goals and an assist to power a dynamic girls varsity hockey attack that resulted in a convincing 5-1 victory over Greenwich Academy on Jan. 8.
Lizzie Burke ’21, Emily Ferguson ’20, and Sandrine Brien ’20 also scored as the Bearcats (2-3-1) started slowly but erupted for two goals in the second period and three in the third to ice the game.
By the final horn, Hotchkiss had outshot GA 22-13, including tallies of 9-1 in the second period and 8-3 in the third period. Traggio led all Bearcats with five shots on goal, and Burke, Brien, Molly Donegan ’22, Jami Macdonald ’22, Lydia Bullock ’22, and Jelani Adorno ’20 each tallied multiple shots on the day.
Goaltender Maggie Hatch ’21 put on another stellar display in net, stopping 12 Gator shots, including nine in the first period when it seemed as if the visitors had the momentum. The game turned after the first intermission, however, when Brien scored the first goal on a shot from point-blank range with 12:19 remaining.
Traggio doubled the margin late in the period, receiving a nifty pass from behind the net from Donegan and burying the shot for a 2-0 lead. It was Donegan’s second assist of the period.
The third period featured much of the same puck possession and assertive play from Hotchkiss, and Burke extended the lead with another close-range goal, this time on a pass from Ferguson. The Gators would rally with a goal of their own at 8:04 to cut the deficit to two, but Ferguson responded a minute later with a laser shot from the blue line to make it 4-1.
Traggio scored the final goal of the game at 5:04, as Luna Lu ’23 intercepted a Greenwich pass and found her in front of the net for the point-blank opportunity.
