Traggio ’22, Doran ’24 Compete in Brogden Cup

Two girls varsity lacrosse players, Ellie Traggio ’22 and Avery Doran ’24, had the opportunity to play for elite teams at this past weekend’s Brogden Cup lacrosse tournament.

The tournament, which originated in 1988, was restarted in 2019 and features youth teams from the United States, Ontario, and the Haudenosaunee Nationals. Traggio played for the USA Under-18 team, and Doran played for the Haudenosaunee Under-16 girls.

Jami-Lynn Macdonald ’22 had also been selected to play for the Team Ontario Under-18 team, but was unable to compete at the event.

The three teams played against each other in a round-robin tournament as part of this year’s Fall Classic event in Maryland, which also featured games involving the senior teams for both Canada and the United States.

Putting on a national jersey was an unforgettable experience for both Traggio and Doran. “Representing my country was such a cool feeling,” said Traggio. “I felt so much pride and joy wearing my jersey, and am so grateful for the opportunity.

The Haudenosaunee team was making its debut appearance this year, which gave it special significance for Doran. “This was our first opportunity to play together and represent our First Nations on a national level and it was an awesome and incredible experience,” she said.

Both Traggio and Doran said that they honed their existing skills and learned new techniques from playing with their teammates and against their opponents. “I think any opportunity to watch and learn from the very best in your sport is a great way to improve your game,” said Doran.

Traggio added that she also learned a great deal from watching the other games at the event featuring the men’s and women’s teams.

Beyond the games, the weekend also provided an opportunity to make long-lasting connections with other girls playing lacrosse at a high level around the country.

“I now have a core memory with 21 other girls that I didn’t know particularly well before, and am coming out of this experience with new friends who I will be playing against or with for the next four years,” said Traggio.

Head girls varsity coach Anna Traggio, who also attended the event, spoke with pride of the selection of all three girls. “Having three players chosen for this event shows that we’ve been able to identify really amazing, smart, athletic, competitive, and talented young women,” she said. “It is wonderful to see them join our program and develop into powerful, graceful players and role models.”
