Theresa Yu ’19 and David Vega ’20 reached the semifinals of the U.S. Open Ultimate Frisbee club championships with their Under-20 team, the Connecticut Harpoon.

The tournament, held earlier this month, included 19 teams from across the country. Teams were divided into pools of 4-5 teams and competed in a round-robin series to determine who would advance to the championship bracket.

Despite entering the tournament as the #13 seed, the Harpoon acquitted themselves well in the opening round, going 2-1 against the other three teams in their pool and losing only to the eventual pool winner, MUFABots (Madison, WI).

The two wins were enough to send the Harpoon through to the championship bracket, but their opening match would pit them against #6 seed and undefeated Equinox from Vermont. The Harpoon pulled out a huge upset, beating Equinox 12-9 to advance to the semifinals. Yu scored two goals and one assist in the game, and Vega also scored a goal.

In the semis, Harpoon would face an even bigger Cinderella story, the #16 seed Incognito (Indianapolis, IN), who had finished 3-1 in their pool play. Like the quarters, the match was a back-and-forth affair, with neither team leading by more than two goals going into halftime. INcognito was able to gradually open a 10-7 lead, and although Harpoon rallied late to close the score to 14-13, INcognito scored the winning goal to advance to the finals.

Both Vega and Yu made an impact in the semis again, with Vega scoring four goals and one assist, and Yu nabbing a goal and an assist. Over the course of the entire tournament, Yu finished with six goals and six assists, and Vega scored nine goals and one assist.
