Volleyball Sweeps Ethel Walker

The varsity volleyball team ran its winning streak to three matches with a 3-0 sweep over visiting Ethel Walker on Oct. 2.

A solid service game and timely outside hitting, particularly, from captain Piper Willinger ’22, led the Bearcats to a 25-10, 25-8, 25-18 victory.

The match started off on a strong note for Hotchkiss, as server Kate McCormick ’23 served three aces in a row en route to a 9-0 lead. After trading the next few points, the Bearcats went on another run to open a 16-3 lead and close out the set at 25-10.

Willinger led all hitters in the set with three kills, and the rotation that included her, McCormick, Jami Macdonald ’22, Maisie Wright ’24, Paige Dzenutis ’23, and Ore Adedija ’23 won 14 of the 17 points they played together.

The second set saw more varied combinations of players, with strong contributions by Mimi Emswiler ’24 and Rena Peng ’22. The rotation with Emswiler, Peng, Macdonald, Willinger, McCormick, and libero Ella Yu ’24 won all seven points they played together. Willinger and McCormick led the team with three kills each in the set.

The two teams played the first few points more evenly, with Hotchkiss nursing a narrow 5-3 lead before scoring the next five points and 14 of the next 16 points to build a commanding 19-5 lead and win the set.

In the final set, Hotchkiss faced a tougher test from its opponent and some challenges in their serving game, but still managed to gut out the 25-18 victory. Peng led all scorers with three kills.

The set saw Ethel Walker take the lead four times, including as late as 13-12, and only a late five-point run by Hotchkiss saw it open up any significant lead at 22-17.
