Von Jess ’19 Boots Wesleyan to OT Win

Mason von Jess ’19 continued a superb freshman season with a game-winning field goal as Wesleyan defeated archrival Amherst 31-28 in double overtime on Oct. 26.

The win continues a banner season for the Cardinals (6-1) and for von Jess, who has already been named the NESCAC Special Teams Player of the Week twice this year in just his first season with the team.

Playing in all seven games for Wesleyan, von Jess has made 8 of 11 field goal tries, with a long of 42 yards, which ranks third among all NESCAC schools. On extra points, von Jess has a conference-best 96% success rate (24-of-25).

The game against Amherst saw a wild finish where the Mammoths blocked von Jess’s attempted game-winner and both teams missed a field goal attempt in overtime. The Cardinals then intercepted an Amherst pass to set up von Jess’s game winner.

At Hotchkiss, von Jess was a standout in three sports, earning three varsity letters in football, three in hockey, and two in lacrosse. He received the James T. Bryan ’11 Award and the Martin Dwyer III ’65 Memorial Hockey Award as a senior, as well as being named to the all-conference team in football.
