Three varsity winter teams will see their seasons continue this week as the girls hockey and both basketball teams prepare for their respective NEPSAC tournaments.
The boys basketball team (20-1) has produced a superlative season, with its only loss coming back in January to Canterbury, a team they will not see in the Class A bracket. The Bearcats enter the tournament as the #1 seed and will host #8 Berkshire on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. Hotchkiss defeated the Bears 78-51 at home in the only two meetings between the teams.
If they win their quarterfinal match, the team will face an opponent from the east, as #4 Exeter squares off against #5 Milton. Waiting on the other side of the bracket are #2 St. Sebastian’s, #3 Belmont Hill, #6 Loomis, and #7 Trinity-Pawling.
Two years ago, the Bearcats advanced all the way to the finals, losing a nail-biter to Loomis.
Enjoying a renaissance this season, the girls basketball team (10-8) returns to the tournament for the first time in nearly a decade. The Bearcats qualified as the #8 seed and will head to BB&N on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. for a neutral-court matchup against top-seeded Thayer. The two teams did not play against each other this season.
If they advance to the semifinals, the team will face either #4 Kent or #4 Sacred Heart, both of whom defeated the Bearcats in their only games this season.
On the ice, the girls hockey team (8-9-1) also punched its postseason ticket. Entering the bracket as the #6 seed, the Bearcats will travel to #3 Choate on Wednesday for a 3:00 p.m. game. The two teams should be quite familiar with each other, having played less than a week ago. Choate pulled out a narrow 3-2 victory in the only game this season between the two teams.
The winner of that quarterfinal will play #2 BB&N, which received a bye, on Saturday.
