Wrestling Fifth at Westerns

The varsity wrestling team traveled to compete in the WNEISWA championships, finishing fifth overall out of 14 teams.

Head coach Cooper Puls had these highlights to share from the event:

"At 5:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, we loaded up the mid-bus with 14 wrestlers and our stalwart manager for the trip down to Westport and our first tournament in almost exactly two years.  Spirits were high despite the early morning and the chilly weather, and the Bearcats started out the day strong, winning matches and advancing into the bracket in all but three weight classes.

"To go through every noteworthy match would be impractical, but I would like to highlight a few special performances:

  1. Kayla Uzwiak '22 at 113 lbs., who was the only female wrestler at the entire tournament to medal, earning sixth place.
  2. Peter Barkley '23 at 126 lbs., who turned in his best performance all year, finishing the day in fourth place after starting out unseeded and wrestling five tough matches.
  3. Adam Wright '24 at 138 lbs., who finished his day with a decisive win to earn third place in a challenging weight class.
  4. Hongquan Chen '22 at 145 lbs., who wrestled above his seed to finish in fifth place.
  5. Jonathan Peng at '22 152 lbs., wrestling in only his third competition of the year, who also managed a respectable fifth-place finish.
  6. Ben Johnson '22 at 195 lbs., who as an unseeded wrestler started his day by beating the #2 seed from GFA, and proceeded to chew through the rest of his bracket on the way to a second-place finish.
  7. Sean Donovan '23 at 220 lbs., who also finished in second place after pinning his way through the rest of his bracket.
  8. Duncan Griffin '22 at 285 lbs., who wrestled hard and intelligently all day, earning a fifth-place finish.

"Also winning matches and contributing to the team's success were Vance Spears '23 at 160 lbs., who went 2-2 on the day but didn't manage to get on the podium, and Ian Marshall '23, a first-year wrestler competing at 170 lbs. who went 1-2.

"At the end of the day, the Bearcats finished fifth out of the 14 teams in attendance, our second-best finish in the last five years.  We qualified seven wrestlers for this weekend's New England tournament, as well as five female wrestlers who will compete in the girl's division.  That tournament will be hosted by Deerfield Academy, and is a direct qualifier for the National Prep tournament held the following weekend."
