Hotchkiss teachers must demonstrate inclusion in their teaching practices. All faculty and students participate in anti-bias training. In addition, faculty must identify one individual diversity, equity, and inclusion goal as part of their annual portfolio. Faculty receive support from their head of department and professional development resources in order to achieve that goal.

We continue to focus on curriculum redesign, including changes to curriculum in American literature and U.S. history. In addition, we offer Honors course offerings in Black studies in English and Humanities & Social Sciences. Ongoing efforts at the departmental level include examinig the curriculum to support learners from diverse educational backgrounds.

We have long offered courses in religious studies that expose students to a diversity of traditions. We offer a LGBTQ+ History course, and we are incorporating LGBTQ+ history and perspectives into the required second-year U.S. History and including more LGBTQ+ writers in the English program.

Hotchkiss conducts a climate survey to collect student feedback on a wide variety of topics, including Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. The survey findings help the School track its performance. 

In a pluralistic community, differing points of view are welcome. Protecting the scope of open discourse and the courageous exploration of ideas has always been, and continues to be, an important part of the Hotchkiss culture.
