The Hotchkiss mission statement opens with the words, ‘The Hotchkiss School seeks to inspire a diverse range of students who are committed to the betterment of self and society.’ We cannot claim to have lived up to that mission unless we take action to ensure that every student in our care learns and grows in a community that is fair and equitable. Such a pluralistic community benefits every one of its members.

In June 2020, the Board of Trustees established a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. The committee was later renamed the Pluralism & Community Committee in recognition of the foundational importance of pluralism at Hotchkiss. This committee includes trustees, administrators, faculty, staff, and alumni. It is charged with supporting the work of the School in devising and implementing ongoing changes to create a fundamentally pluralistic and inclusive institution at all levels, and to fully realize the mission of The Hotchkiss School, which is to inspire a diverse range of students who are committed to the betterment of self and society.
