Dean of Faculty

The Hotchkiss School invites applications, nominations, and inquiries as it seeks a reflective, innovative, and collaborative leader as its next dean of faculty. The School has retained Storbeck Search to assist in the search. Evaluation of candidate materials will begin immediately and continue until a new dean of faculty is named. The ideal start date for this opportunity is July 1, 2024.

Professional Development

Faculty are strongly encouraged to apply for professional learning and development support during the school year and over the summer. In general, academic department budgets support membership in professional organizations, subscriptions to professional publications, and also support acquisition of books and other materials. When department funds are insufficient, the Dean of Faculty helps faculty attend professional seminars and expenses associated with travel to other schools or institutions. The Dean of Faculty also supports professional learning activities that occur over breaks and over the summer. The School allocates particular funds to spring break and summer professional learning and curriculum development. For this reason, funding for spring and summer projects are subject to a grant application process.

Professional Development

Staff are encouraged to improve their skills and increase their job knowledge through additional education and/or training. Tuition assistance is available by application to regular full-time staff employed for a minimum of one year, for accredited education courses that are job-related or of future benefit to the School, such as qualified degree programs. Approved tuition assistance funds 50% of the cost of tuition and books, up to $5,250 annually, if an employee is pursuing education or development at their own request.

Hotchkiss also supports employees’ professional development funded through individual departments.

Hotchkiss is committed to developing innovative hiring strategies in order to attract and retain the most capable faculty and staff, including the best teachers of color.

Understanding and Combating Implicit Bias

All Hotchkiss employees receive training in anti-racism and the unconscious stereotyping known as implicit bias. Implicit bias is grounded in cultural perspective and experience, and it exists within all of us. Our biases affect our assumptions, actions, and decisions, and they can have a significant impact on those around us.

By working in partnership with outside experts in the field, Hotchkiss is creating a comprehensive training and professional learning plan that will enable the school to train faculty and staff to recognize implicit bias and deepen their understanding of the ways implicit bias affects school culture. We will strengthen our community by committing to ongoing training and learning.

Review and Assessment of Institutional Policies

Working in partnership with external experts, Hotchkiss has undertaken a comprehensive review of policies and materials including disciplinary protocols, the student handbook, and the employee handbook. Materials have been updated with clear regulations with respect to discrimination and racism.

Members of the Community Conduct Council, which investigates potential infractions of the Code of Ethical Conduct, including harassment and discrimination, have participated in professional development focused on the investigative process.

Affinity Support for Employees of Color at Peer Schools

Just as students of color benefit from being around peers who look like they do, so do adults. The experience of being an adult of color, or a family of color, on a primarily white campus can be isolating. Beginning in 2021, Hotchkiss will host social/networking gatherings for BIPOC faculty at Hotchkiss and other boarding schools in the region.

By creating a meaningful network for BIPOC professionals, we strengthen the community in which we want top professionals to teach, mentor, and raise their families. More than that, we strengthen the community for every member of every color.
