The Yearbook of The Hotchkiss School
Dear Families of the Class of 2024,
Every year, a culmination of our time together at Hotchkiss is celebrated through the yearbook, titled the Mischianza. Our team this year has begun preparing the 2023-24 Mischianza. All members of the Class of 2024 will receive a yearbook free of charge. For families who would like to order additional copies or members of other classes, please refer to the pricing information below.
The yearbook is built upon the generous support of our classmates and their families. In the past, many families contributed to the Mischianza through donations or a paid congratulatory ad with words of encouragement, celebration, or reflection. These ads provide a personal touch to each book. We hope this wonderful tradition of support continues this year.

General Information about the Yearbook
class of 2024 Portraits
Deadline: April 30, 2024
The Mischianza allots a half page for each Class of 2024 student profile, which consists of a student portrait (color photograph) and text that the student supplies.
Class of 2024 students should submit their portraits to mischianza@hotchkiss.org by April 30, 2024.
Photos should be color, 4"x6" portraits (vertical orientation), 600 ppi. Please be sure to send a high-resolution version of the portrait, with a file size greater than 1MB.
The Mischianza provides an opportunity for seniors to have their photos taken on campus. Students may contact Mrs. Colleen MacMillan, instructor in photography at Hotchkiss and a professional photographer, to take their photo this fall: colleen@colleenmacmillan.net. Families may also email her to order photo prints.
Parent Ads and Salutations
Deadline: April 30, 2024
Our staff aims to create a book that reflects the current year at Hotchkiss, with a focus on the graduating class. We invite all Class of 2024 families to place personal advertisements and salutations in the Mischianza for their graduates.

Mischianza History
The word mischianza, or meschianza, is derived from the conflation of the Italian words mescere (to mix) and mischiare (to mingle). The Mischianza was a medley of events held at Walnut Grove in Philadelphia on May 18, 1778, to celebrate the departure of General William Howe, commander-in-chief of the British army in Philadelphia, for his native England. Howe’s officers each contributed 140 pounds to pay for the affair, which included a procession of decorated boats that advanced up the Delaware River and docked near Green Street Wharf, a jousting tournament on a nearby green, an elaborate banquet, dancing, and a colorful display of fireworks.
With specific regard to the use of the word at Hotchkiss, the foreign-sounding name corresponded to similar publications like Pot-Pourri at Andover and Olla Podrida at Lawrenceville. The first Hotchkiss Meschianza was published in 1896. Someone from the Class of 1896 with the nickname “Hedge” is credited with coming up with the name. The name was changed to Mischianza in 1905; Headmaster Huber Buehler suggested that spelling it with the “i” was more correct.
