Field Hockey Through to Semis on Penalty Strokes

by Roger Wistar

The varsity field hockey team advanced to the semifinals of the New England championships with a victory on penalty strokes over Nobles & Greenough on Nov. 15.

Goalie Emma Smith '18 stopped three of the four shots she faced in penalty strokes and the Bearcats converted on three of four chances to win the overtime period.

Hotchkiss produced a dominant effort on the day, outshooting the Bulldogs 6-3 and outcornering them 19-4. But after starting forward Gracyn Campbell '18 scored at 5' on a first-half corner to give the Bearcats the 1-0 lead, Nobles rallied with their own set piece goal at 39' to set up the overtime heroics.

Scoring for Hotchkiss in penalty strokes were Sarah Hurlock '19, Isabella Pugliese '20, and Sandrine Brien '20 with the clinching goal.

With the win, the Bearcats now advance to face their archrival, top-seeded Greenwich Academy, in a semifinal contest on Saturday. The teams met two weeks ago in Lakeville, with the Gators eking out a 2-1 victory in overtime.

The championship game will be held at Ethel Walker on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
