Nick Adams '19 finished fifth at 132 lbs. at the New England tournament, securing a bid to Nationals.
Cristian Crider '20 (152 lbs.) and co-captain Dean Parenteau '18 (170 lbs.) also competed at the event, held at Tabor on Feb. 17. Crider finished eighth overall in his weight class.
Adams was forced to take a long journey back onto the podium after dropping his opening match 16-6 to a wrestler from Roxbury Latin. Regrouping, he responded with a narrow 5-3 win in his first consolation match, and then produced two dominant results, earning a third-period pin and then a 15-5 major decision over wrestlers from Tabor and Chase.
In the consolation semifinals, Adams ran into a difficult opponent from Belmont Hill, ultimately getting pinned at 5:00. He regrouped, however, and produced an exciting 8-5 win in the fifth-place bout. The match was tied 3-3 entering the final period before Adams produced a reversal and a takedown to secure his spot at Nationals.
Crider cruised to an opening 10-2 victory in his bracket before running into a buzz saw, Kevin Lyskawa from Exeter. Including his 17-0 technical fall over Crider, Lyskawa produced results of pin, technical fall, pin, and 15-2 major decision en route to the title. Crider battled back with a win in the consolation bracket before dropping his final two matches to finish eighth.
Parenteau also faced a very difficult opponent from Exeter in his opening match, who was seeded second and finished runner-up at the event. Parenteau was pinned in that match and in his first consolation bracket match.
Adams' fifth-place finish earns him a place at the Prep Nationals tournament, held next weekend at Lehigh University.
