Advanced Environmental Science

SESSION II: JuLY 11-24, 2027
COST: $5,250
Criteria:
- Completion of environmental science (summer 2027 or earlier); or
- For rising 8th and 9th graders, completion of an advanced middle school biology course or a high school biology course
Advanced Environmental Science will build upon the fundamentals that students have learned from previous classes in environmental science or in Environmental Science Portals to experience real scientific research following the scientific method. Students will be guided to develop their own research questions, create an experimental design, observe changes in their study, and report on their findings, similar to how scientists conduct their work.
Additional experiences will be a visit to the Cary Institute in Millbrook, NY, to speak to current scientists and the cutting-edge work they are doing today. Students will visit the U.S. Forest Lab in Hamden, CT, to learn about the latest findings in wildlife diseases affecting trees in the northeast U.S.
Students should have attended Environmental Science Portals I prior to enrolling or have completed an equivalent course. The course takes place outdoors, and students should be prepared to spend several hours outdoors at a time.
