Hotchkiss Theatre Students Receive 2019 Halo Awards


On May 29, Director of Theatre Derek Brashears accompanied students from the cast and crew of the Hotchkiss Dramatic Association’s spring production George Orwell’s 1984 to the 2019 Halo Awards held at the Palace Theater in Waterbury, CT. The Halo Awards, organized by Seven Angels Theatre in Waterbury, recognizes distinctive achievements among high school theatre programs throughout Connecticut.

For their work on HDA’s spring production of George Orwell’s 1984, Jailyn Mallard ’19 was awarded Best Sound Design; Luke Gardiner ’21, Dylan Kalaydjian ’19, and Dominic Bellido ’20 were awarded Best Special Effects, and Rock Zhu ’20 was awarded Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Contemporary Play. 

Hotchkiss students nominated in other categories include: Jailyn Mallard ’19 for Best Incidental or Original Music in a Play, Scott Lewis ’19 for Best Performance by a Supporting Actor in a Play, and Skylar Kim ’19 for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Contemporary Play.

HDA was also nominated for the Fearless Award and Best Contemporary Play for 1984.
