Santa’s Real Helpers, Sheng’s series of photographs submitted in the art portfolio category for the 2020 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, was selected for a gold medal alongside fifteen other winners in the art portfolio and writing portfolio categories from a pool of more than 110,000 students who submitted nearly 320,000 works of art and writing. Sheng’s photos were installed in the Main Building hallway and initially won a gold key designation at Scholastic's state level competition in Connecticut.

National submissions were judged by leaders in the visual and literary arts for excellence in originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision. Only 3,000 works received a National Medal. Therefore, Jerry Sheng’s work places within the top 1% of all submissions and he joins a list of such notable alumni award winners including Tschabalala Self, Stephen King, Kay WalkingStick, Charles White, Joyce Carol Oates, and Andy Warhol.
